Marine Management Organisation Socio-Economic Typologies of Coastal Communities
Created as part of the MMO report - Maximising the Socio-Economic Impacts of Marine Planning for English Coastal Communities (planning team). Differentiates between different types of of coastal areas on the basis of their socio-economic characteristics. Further information on coastal typologies can be found on page 97 of the report.

The MMO have commissioned there first study of socio-economic factors in Marine Planning, resulting in the publication of the following reports: Maximising the socio-economic benefits of marine planning for English coastal communities (ISBN: 978-1-909452-15-2), The East marine plan area: maximising the socio-economic benefits of marine planning (ISBN: 978-1-909452-16-9), Coastal typologies: detailed method and outputs (ISBN: 978-1-909452-17-6). The information collected will help develop marine plans and maximise the benefits of sustainable marine development for coastal communities. The work will support discussions with stakeholders on the land based opportunities marine planning can bring to specific areas and support MMOs decision making during the planning process and ensure we give consideration to the socio-economic impacts of marine planning in coastal communities. LSOAâs (used as the base geographical unit) within 10km of the low water mark were categorised as one of the following 10 typologies (For further information please refer to the reports). A1 Coastal retreats: Silver seaside A2 Coastal retreats: Working countryside A3 Coastal retreats: Rural chic B1 Coastal challenges: Structural shifters B2 Coastal challenges: New towns and ports B3 Coastal challenges: Striving communities C1 Cosmopolitan coast: Reinventing resorts C2 Cosmopolitan coast: Coastal professionals D1 Coastal fringe: Prosperous suburbia D2 Coastal fringe: Working hard This dataset was then created using that final output. Additional columns have been created in the attribute table NW_MPA, SW_MPA, S_MPA, SE_MPA, E_MPA and NE_MPA. Then a select query was run on each Marine Plan Area (MPA), both inshore and offshore, selecting all typology areas within 10km of the MPA. A distance of 10km was used to match the report. All Typology areas that fell within 10km of the specific MPA were assigned a value of 1 and those not a value of 0. Caveat - The MPAs do not separate the typology areas clearly therefore it was decided the 10km selection area would be the set standard with the knowledge that some typology areas will overlap at MPA boundaries. Known Limitations: Dataset was developed for use internally by the MMO. Where variables correlated highly and were closely associated with other measures, they were excluded them from the typology.
