2014 Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) biological analyses of Marine Scotland Science (MSS) Noss Head (Caithness) benthic camera survey
The main aim of this investigation within and around the Noss Head MPA, Caithness was to improve knowledge of the occurrence and distribution of the species and habitats of recognized conservation importance. A drop-down video survey of benthic habitats within the MPA was undertaken by MSS for SNH at 4 sites on the 11th May 2014 on board the MSS vessel MRV Alba na Mara. Analysis of seabed video and still photographic imagery is used to describe the nature of the seabed in terms of the physical structure and the species assemblages. Runs and run segments were assessed for the presence of protected features and other PMFs, as well as for the presence of species and habitats of recognised conservation importance.

This subtidal seabed data from Noss Head was collected during a research cruise by MSS on board the MRV Alba na Mara (cruise 0614A) on the 11th May 2014. Video images were obtained from 4 drop-down video drifts. Track position and depth data were displayed on a SD video overlay system. HD video footage was recorded at a resolution of 1920x1080. The camera frame also carried a vertically orientated digital stills camera which took photographs of the seabed at intervals, and a laser scaling system. This data were derived from MSS video footage commissioned by SNH for biological analyses. Analyses of the video footage was undertaken by SNH contractor Dr Colin Moore to describe the physical structure and species assemblages present. Species present were identified and quantified using the semi-quantitative MNCR SACFOR scale, as far as possible. Biotopes were allocated based on the biological and physical attributes. Where video runs traversed a sequence of biotopes, the runs are split into corresponding segments with the transition points recorded using the time, position and depth.
