Modelled Mapping of Continuous Underwater Noise Generated By Activities (MMO 1097)
Data outputs from MMO 1097 Modelled Mapping of Continuous Underwater Noise Generated by Activities project. The aim of this project is to produce indicative data for mapping the distribution of anthropogenic continuous underwater noise generated by activities in the south marine plan areas. The data and associated maps produced may inform a range of marine planning and decision making processes, and contribute to facilitating sustainable development in the marine environment. The output dataset is a 2kmx2km grid of modelled sound pressure level derived from typical values produced by categories of AIS (shipping more than 300,000gwt), VMS (fishing more than 12m) and EMS (dredging) data.

These outputs have been prepared by ABP Marine Environmental Research Ltd (ABPmer) on behalf of the Marine Management Organisation (MMO) under project MMO1097 "Modelled mapping of continuous underwater noise generated by activities." A model was built in ArcGIS to produce indicative spatial data of relative continuous or ambient anthropogenic underwater noise distribution generated by activities in the south marine plan areas. The outputs are based on the 2km x 2km AIS density grid for UK waters (MMO project 1066). The spatiotemporal distribution of human activities were represented using AIS shipping density data, Electronic Monitoring System (EMS) aggregate dredging data and Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) fishing data. Then a simple propagation model was used to represent the propagation of noise from these sources. For further information please refer to the main report. The data is created in WGS84 UTM 30N and re-projected to ETRS89. Caveats: The data should not be used at individual case level but as a high level indicative layer. If using this data please consult the KIM team and the report for a complete list of caveats to consider.
