Census 2011 - Island Groups
IslandGroups2011
The geography of Scotland comprises the mainland plus many islands. Some of these islands are inhabited and through time their inhabited/uninhabited status can change. As statistics for individual islands could reveal details about individual people, the individual islands have been grouped into 56 ‘island groups’ for 2011 Census output. Revisions and Corrections An anomaly was discovered in the 2011 Island Groups boundaries where the boundaries for some of the island groups were not including the mainland part of the island group.

The ‘Islands’ table on the NRS/GROS geography 2011 Supporting Information section (http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/geography/geo-prods/census-datasets/2011-census/supp-info.html) provides basic counts of the number of residents and households in each individual island in 2011. This is the only detail, where it is possible to produce statistics at individual island level. The reason for this is that the lowest level of geography for which Census statistics are produced is Output Area (OA). OAs are formed by aggregating postcodes. In order to prevent disclosure of information pertaining to individuals, these OAs cannot contain less than 20 households or less than 50 residents. There are a number of individual islands that do not meet these criteria. Where an OA contains statistics for two or more islands, those islands are placed in the same ‘island group’. A total of 110 islands are classified as ‘inhabited islands’ for NRS statistical geography purposes; 17 of these islands had no usual residents at the time of the 2011 Census. The individual islands dataset is available on the Other NRS Datasets section of the NRS/GROS website (http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/geography/geo-prods/geog-datasets.html) Island Groups structure Inhabited Islands combined with Mainland: Carna, Isle of Danna, Eilean Tioram, Eilean Donnan, Isle of Ewe, Inchfad, Inchmurrin, Inchtavannach, Innis Chonain, Friarton or Moncreiffe Island, Sanda Island, Eilean Shona, Tanera More / Tannara Mòr, Shuna Island (Lismore), Inchcruin, Eilean Horrisdale, Inchlonaig, Eilean Buidhe, Eilean dà Mhèinn, Eilean an Stalcaire / Castle Stalker Isle of Arran: Holy Island Barra / Barraigh: Caisteal Chiosmuil Benbecula / Beinn Na Faoghla: Eilean na Cille, Flodaigh, Griomasaigh / Grimsay (South) Colonsay: Oronsay Eigg: Canna, Muck, Rùm, Sanday (Canna) Housay: Bruray Hoy: Graemsay Isle of Lewis / Eilean Leodhais & Harris / Na Hea: Ensay / Easaigh Luing: Shuna (Luing) Mainland of Orkney: Gairsay, Holm of Grimbister, Lamb Holm, Inner Holm Mainland of Shetland: Papa Stour, Vaila Isle of Mull: Erraid, Gometra, Inch Kenneth, Ulva North Uist / Uibhist A Tuath: Baleshare / Baile Sear Isle of Raasay: Rona / Ronaigh (Skye) Rousay: Egilsay, Wyre Isle of Skye: Eilean Ban, Scalpay (Skye), Soay Stronsay: Auskerry, Papa Stronsay West Burra: Foula The following Uninhabited Islands have been included in the following island groups: Mainland: Ailsa Craig, Inch, Ardwall Isle, Bass Rock, Inchcape / Bell Rock, Eilean Dubh, Island Davaar, Inchcolm, Inchconnachan, Inchkeith, Isle Martin, Isle of May, Island of Stroma Isle of Arran: Pladda Barra / Barraigh: Orasaigh Benbecula / Beinn Na Faoghla: Sunamul Berneray / Beàrnaraigh (North Uist): Pabbay / Pabaigh Bute: Inchmarnock Bressay: Isle of Noss Eigg: Oigh-sgeir / Hyskier Flotta: Cava, Fara Great Cumbrae Island: Little Cumbrae Island Housay: Grunay Hoy: Sule Skerry Jura: Lunga (Luing), Scarba Isle of Lewis / Eilean Leodhais & Harris / Na Hea: Eilean Mòr (Flannan Isles), Killegray / Ceileagraigh, Scarp, Taransay / Tarasaigh Lismore: Eilean Musdile Luing: Torsa Mainland of Orkney: Copinsay Isle of Mull: Calve Island, Dubh Artach North Uist / Uibhist A Tuath: Boreray / Boraraigh, Eilean Leireabhagh, St Kilda or Hirta / Hiort, Ronay / Ronaigh Isle of Raasay: Eilean Fladday Shapinsay: Helliar Holm Isle of Skye: Ornsay, Pabay South Ronaldsay: Muckle Skerry (Pentland Skerries), Swona Tiree: Skerryvore Unst: Muckle Flugga Vatersay / Bhatarsaigh: Bernerary / Beàrnaraigh (Vatersay) While these uninhabited islands have no statistics their boundaries are included in OAs within the ‘island group’ to ensure consistency with our island dataset which comprise inhabited and uninhabited islands. Revisions and Corrections An anomaly was discovered in the 2011 Island Groups boundaries where the boundaries for some of the island groups were not including the mainland part of the island group.
