Environmental assessment reference stations was a module in the Defra project, 'A strategic evaluation of the impacts of aggregate extraction on marine fauna' (2003-2008). The objective of this module was to establish strategically placed reference stations in the vicinity of ongoing and likely future aggregate extraction activity, which would be accessible both to regulators and the industry. These reference stations would also serve to help assess the effects of local and wider scale impacts and provide a temporal component to the evaluation of environmental changes. As well as contributing towards achieving the main objective of Module 3, each publication also concentrates on highly relevant scientific questions such as defining, monitoring and managing thresholds of acceptable disturbance, addressing the underlying principles of Before/After Control/Impact (BACI) survey designs, and defining the decision process necessary for the selection of EARS. The incorporation of EARS into surveys may provide developers with time-series data of sufficient length to allow them to adopt a BACI approach to survey design, thus providing greater confidence when assessing environmental change.
