WFD Artificial Waterbodies: Surface Water Transfer Channels
WFD Artificial Water Bodies –Surface Water Transfers Cycle 1 is a polyline Shapefile dataset containing Water Framework Directive (WFD) attributes that have been collated as defined for the implementation of the Water Framework Directive. The WFD defines an ‘artificial water body’ as a body of surface water created by human activity. Surface channel transfers are defined as open surface channels that are often used to increase the effective catchment area of a reservoir and can sometime transfer waters between catchments. Water bodies are attributed with a unique identifier ‘EA_WB_ID' (equivalent to WB_ID in Cycle 2) so this dataset can be linked directly to other WFD data sources such as physical characteristics, risk, classification and proposed objectives as well as Cycle 2 datasets. This dataset covers the layer for Cycle 1 of the Water Framework Directive and does not include natural water bodies; these are available as WFD RIVER WATER BODIES CYCLE 1. However, the equivalent layer for Cycle 2 is covered under WFD River, Canal and Surface Water Transfer Water bodies Cycle 2 (ie both artificial and natural water bodies) This dataset was previously known as WFD Artificial Waterbodies: Surface Water Transfer Channels. Please note that the Environment Agency no longer provide data for water bodies in Wales - this should now available from Natural Resources Wales. Surface water transfers were extracted from the CEH 1:50K River Network. The CEH River Network was validated by the Environment Agency against OS 1:50,000 Scale Colour Raster where small, incomplete data gaps were identified and where additional surface waters were found additional digitisation was undertaken by Regional staff. It is also of note that man-made river cuttings were removed as these are classified as heavily modified water bodies.
