Report following an independent investigation of grey seals present on the Isles of Scilly during the 2005 breeding season. The survey aimed to achieve a number of objectives identified following a preliminary investigation in 2004. The research was carried out at four locations; the western rocks, the norrard rocks, the eastern isles and annet. The survey itself was conducted largely by volunteers. Pups were sprayed with paint and their age was also estimated. Marking with paint (differing colours for each island) was carried out in order to avoid double counting and to investigate inter-island movements. On-site observations were made for two time periods (interrupted by lunch) and lasted up to 5 hours altogether.Additional observations were made on other islands in each island groups. These observations were of both pups and adults. The report looks at the results gained from the survey work and discusses it along with recommendations made to the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust and Natural England to reduce disturbance.
