Kent and Essex IFCA Fishing Activity Mapping 2008 - present

Abstract

Kent and Essex patrol vessels log sightings of commercial fishing vessels at sea along with the activity of the vessel when it is sighted. Data is collected for the purposes of fishery management and risk based enforcement of the fleet. Time, date, position, vessel PLN, vessel name, gear type and activity are recorded. Data is then inputted into GIS so that the results can be spatially analysed.

Data is collected using GPS data from the vessels instruments as well as radar returns from the vessels instruments where required. Vessel instruments are checked and calibrated monthly. Once data is collected it is inputted into a patrol vessel log database from where the individual data can be extracted and placed into GIS software.
