Title

1980 Eastern Irish Sea Groundfish Survey Catch Data - Silver Star Time Series

Abstract

A series of groundfish surveys were carried out on the fishing vessel Silver Star from 1976 to 1991 in the eastern Irish Sea. Fishing took place using a Boris Goshawk trawl towed for an hour. This data is from the 3 surveys carried out during 1980. Numbers at length by centimetre of the main commercial fish species are recorded. Station positions by area are recorded.

Lineage

Three cruises were carried out in 1980: - **Silver Star 01/80 (10th March - 29th March)** Trawling began on 11th March and continued for 5 days until all the groundfish trawling stations along the Welsh coast had been completed. Strong winds prevented work until the 20th, after which 11 out of the intended 14 stations were completed off the Isle of Man working from Douglas. 31 one-hour trawl hauls were carried out in total, all commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 406 plaice, 239 whiting, 66 cod, 9 sole. - **Silver Star 02/80 (7th June - 28th June)** Trawling began at Conwy on the 7th June and continued through until the 11th. The vessel then sailed to Douglas after which four trawl hauls were carried out on the 13th. Increasing NE winds delayed work until 16th, the final trawls were then carried out and completed by the end of the 17th June. 34 one-hour hauls were completed in total, all commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 380 plaice, 239 whiting, 59 sole, 35 cod. - **Silver Star 04/80 (20th October - 14th November)** Trawling commenced from Conwy from 20th to 24th October with only one day being lost for bad weather. Passage was then made to the Isle of Man on the 25th, where due to strong onshore winds the vessel was confined to the inner harbour at Douglas with trawling only being possible on one of the eight days spent there. A return trip was made back to Conwy on the 3rd November, but persistent gales and rough seas allowed only four days work before the cruise ended on the 14th. In total, only 4 stations were worked from the Isle of Man, and 19 of the intended 20 were worked in the Welsh sector. All commercial species were measured and otoliths were taken from 236 plaice, 172 whiting, 148 cod, 58 sole.
