MRNE013400000041
Survey name: 2004 English Nature (EN) Isle of Thanet European Marine Site Sublittoral Monitoring This is a collation of surveys to gather data and evidence from a variety of marine environments. The survey purposes vary and include recommended Marine Conservation Zone (rMCZ) Phase I or II verification surveys, condition assessments, surveys of features of Natura 2000 sites (Special Area of Conservation, Special Protection Area), Intertidal surveys, Benthic grab surveys and others. All surveys are carried out to specified standards and follow established methodologies. Attribution statement: © Natural England copyright. "This survey forms part of a larger programme to monitor specific features of all the sublittoral marine SACs in England. The project was designed to enable the condition of the Thanet cSAC to be assessed against the targets for the feature listed in the table below. The survey carried out by the NHM (Tittley et al. 1998) had established a baseline of information for this site in 1997. The present survey required diving fieldwork to repeat the 1997 subtidal work and provide a comparison with the extant data sets against which the site condition could be assessed. Fieldwork was carried out during 2004, using Phase 2 survey methods, and comparisons were made between the data from this survey and the earlier work, particularly that of the NHM in 1997. Summary of the major conclusions Several biotopes were recorded during the survey work which are representative of animal bored chalk. Of these MCR.SFR.Pid was regularly encountered during the survey. The majority of biotopes found in 1997 were recorded again in 2004, although there were some differences in the biotopes recorded at specific stations. One additional biotope was recorded in 2004 (MytHAs). dThe MolPol biotope, characterised by large aggregations of the ascidian Molgula manhattensis, which was recorded from the area in 1995 and 1997, was not found in 2004.Extensive mats of mussels Mytilus edulis were found in 2004 but had not been recorded in 1997.A comparison of data from the 2004 survey with similar data from 1997 showed that although there were changes in abundance of several of the species, and there were large differences in the species lists, there was a constant core community over the seven year period. dSmall plants of the kelp Laminaria digitata were found in deeper water in 2004 than on previous surveys. There also appeared to have been an increase in foliose red algae at a number of sites in 2004. These observations suggest that there may have been a period of improved underwater visibility at a critical time for the settlement and growth of these plants. The seabed around the Isle of Thanet is a dynamic environment with harsh underwater conditions. It is likely that changes of the scale observed occur on a regular basis. d"
