The dataset is areas of 'Dense parkland' that is defined as forested habitat of limited extent consisting of widely spaced mature, veteran or ancient trees where canopy cover exceeds 20% of the land area. It can include underplanted or regenerating areas that were previously more open in character e.g. Belvoir forest. Parkland excludes arboreta meeting HAP criteria. Dense parkland is a Secondary Land Use Code (SLUC) designated in the Forest Service sub-compartment database. SLUC are attributes applied to sub compartments, for forest management purposes, and for reporting in relation to Primary Land Use Objectives.

Areas of parkland have been identified in Forest Service forests after a series of consultations and field outings had taken place between Forest Service, NIEA and CMS. Parkland excludes arboreta meeting HAP criteria. The data has been extracted from Forest Service sub-compartment database. The data is maintained by the Forest Service on the Geographical Information System (GIS). Secondary Land Use Codes are attributes applied to sub compartments, for forest management purposes, and for reporting in relation to Primary Land Use Objectives.
