Nutrient concentration data collected on the RV Cefas Endeavour as part of
CEND17_18, CEND03_19 and CEND04_19, including concentrations of nitrite,
nitrate, ammonia, phosphate and silicate. Samples were collected for use in
eutrophication assessments and to test the Ferrybox water sampler.
Samples were collected using three different methods:
( 1.)Manually from the continuous flow (CF) with mercuric chloride added.
( 2.)Manually from the continuous flow then frozen.
( 3.)Automatically with a water sampler attached to the Ferrybox with
mercuric chloride added.

Sample collection methods
( 1.)Manual CF mercuric chloride. Samples were collected from the surface
underway system into 1 litre polyethylene bottles. A subsample was
filtered through a glass microfibre GF/F filter and the sample was
preserved with mercuric chloride to give a final concentration of 20
mg/l. Samples were refrigerated until analysis.
( 2.)Manual CF frozen. Samples were collected directly from the surface
underway system into polycarbonate sample bottles and frozen at -20 deg
C until analysis.
( 3.)Water sampler mercuric chloride. 150ml water samples were collected from
the surface underway system using an automated Cefas Technology Limited
water sampler into polyethylene bags which had mercuric chloride added,
to give a final concentration of 47 mg/l. Samples were refrigerated
until analysis.
Sample analysis methods.
All samples were sent to the nutrients laboratory at the University of East
Anglia for analysis of nutrient concentrations. Samples were analysed on a
Skalar continuous flow analyser using the methods detailed by Skalar.
