16/10/2014 WAKEC-9GEJCU Town End - Pontefract The proposed works include the removal of the existing signalised junctions and replacing with a double roundabout and Puffin crossings. Town End junction is located in the centre of Pontefract. The junction has been signalised for at least the last 17 years along with modifications during this period, and serves the A645 and A639 roads. The junction during peak periods is heavily congested with long queues. Prior to the signalisation of the junction it was formally a ‘double’ roundabout (1970s to 1997). The roads are subject to a 30mph speed limit with road lighting provided throughout. The existing traffic signals incorporate pedestrian facilities with various convoluted routes through the junctions. Town End has up to 30,000 vehicle movement per day. The works will need to be managed to minimise disruption to both road users and pedestrian traffic as well as maintaining access to the business and residential properties. 15/05/2014 31/10/2014 No 0 Highways

24/10/2014 WAKEC-9Q7E-XSKLCL Bretton Reservoir Lower Lake Spillway 1. Introduction It is intended to improve a number of the elements of the dam for the Bretton Lower Reservoir in the Yorkshire Sculpture Park as requested by the Reservoir Panel Engineer. These works consist of a number of items which improve the dam’s ability to pass the probable maximum flood (PMF), ensures its continuing stability and improves the ability to lower the water level. It also includes items of heavy maintenance. The cascade channel and weirs have listed status and the park environment is visited by members of the public. 2. Site Access, Enabling Works and Facilities. The principal access to the site will be from the A637 near the existing car park. The contractor is to introduce a means of traffic management that effectively allows construction traffic through the parkland while it is being used by members of the public in a manner that minimises disruption to the public and ensures the safety of all. However access across the dam is limited by the loading capacity of the ornamental bridge and the bridge at the boat house. It is also required to maintain access to the domestic dwelling on the south side of the dam. To gain access to the upstream face of the dam, a temporary crossing will be constructed across the Dearne cut to the entrance of the original spillway. Measures will be taken to ensure that the reeds will regrow after the project is completed. As the site hosts the endangered cray fish, biosecurity will be required. 3. Investigations A number of investigations are required to define the extent of the works and refine design elements. These are: · Confirmation of the thickness of the existing masonry wall to the right bank of the cascade · A check of the competency and level of the bedrock under right bank of the cascade · Clearance and investigation of the original bypass · Investigation into the mill offlet 4. Increase Spillway Capacity. To increase the spillway capacity, the entrance to the original spillway and the more recent (main) concrete spillway will be made more hydraulically efficient by introducing “bullnose” walls, two each side of the main spillway entrance and one at the original spillway. At the main spillway the works will comprise the careful partial demolition of the existing spillway structure, excavation within the dam embankment for foundations, the installation of piles the construction of the reinforced concrete bullnoses to the height of the existing wave wall and the provision of appropriate cladding to match the existing. The entrance to the original spillway will require the careful partial demolition of the existing weir, excavation for the bullnose foundations, the construction of the bullnose in masonry and backfilling behind with a lean mix concrete. 5. Repairs to the stone pitching The stone pitching provides protection against wave erosion and needs repairing to match the original together with the removal of any remaining vegetation and roots. The pitching will be replaced around the new bullnoses. 6. Cascade wall improvements The walls of the cascade are subject to high velocities and the right bank (west) wall also supports the toe of the embankment. The existing masonry wall is to be carefully dismantled. The stone stored for reuse and a precast wall erected in short sections to ensure that the toe of the dam is protected at all times. The masonry will then be replaced so that the finished product resembles the original. Sections of the cascade wall will be rebuilt and the remainder repointed and repaired. This part of the works is to a listed structure and therefore has to be executed in a manner which is synthetic to the original. 7. Improvements to the bed of the cascade To reduce water velocities two check weirs are to be constructed of reinforced concrete and clad to give a similar appearance to the rest of the cascade. The recently constructed weir and concrete repairs are also to be clad with appropriate material to match the original cascade. Further repairs to the existing bed are also required including a concrete bed between the check weirs. 8. Increase capacity of the means of empting the reservoir The Reservoir Engineer requires that the means of empting the reservoir is increased. Therefore the existing syphon is to be replaced with one of 450 millimetres in diameter. 9. Repair the gabions on the right bank of the main spillway. The gabion wall on the right bank at the end of the main spillway need repairs and maintenance. 10. Landscaping and Reinstatement A new steel fence is required along the crest of the dam. The working areas will be reinstated with materials to match the existing and are sympathetic to the surroundings of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. 05/01/2015 24/05/2015 No 0 Highways
