This standardised UK pressure-activities matrix was created following a review of previous attempts to link human activities to marine pressures. Coastal and marine ecosystems have historically been subjected to a number of human-induced pressures associated with a variety of marine activities and developments. The mechanisms through which specific human activities impact the marine environment, however, are still poorly understood.
An assessment of the potential links between activities and pressures was undertaken. Five out of the eleven studies presented in \jncc-corpfile\JNCC Corporate Data\Marine\Evidence\PressuresImpacts\3. Pressures_Activities\Combined_P-A_Matrix\Combined_P_A_Matrix)data_sources.csv conducted an analysis on the links between human activities and marine pressures and presented some form of pressure-activities matrix. These studies are:
- Business as Usual (BaU) Study (ABPMer 2012).
- MarLIN, Marine and coastal activities to environmental factors matrix (MarLIN 2003).
- Natural England and JNCC simplified pressure-activities matrix (NE & JNCC Matrix published in the MB0102 sensitivity work).
- Options for developing Ecosystem Based Management (ODEMM) linkage framework (Koss et al., 2011).
- Scottish MPA Features, Activities, Sensitivities Tool (FEAST 2013).
The pressure-activities links identified in each of these five matrices were collated and combined to produce a single matrix in which all pressure-activities links are highlighted. The combined matrix represents all links made by the data sources.
