Legislation

Find primary and secondary UK legislation dating from 1267 to the present day, updated as new laws are enacted.

Legislation.gov.uk is the official home of UK legislation, delivered by the National Archives. It includes:

  • legislation made by the UK Parliament on reserved matters that apply across the whole UK, such as defence and immigration

  • devolved legislation made by the Scottish Parliament and Government, Welsh Senedd, and Northern Ireland Assembly on matters like health, education, and housing

  • historic legislation, including Acts of the English Parliament from 1267 and the Old Scottish Parliament from 1424

  • UK Public General Acts - the main Acts of Parliament that apply to the general public across the UK, such as the Data Protection Act or the Equality Act

  • Secondary legislation covering England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Legislation is kept up to date with amendments so you can read the law as it currently stands. Complete data is available since 1988 for primary and 2014 for secondary legislation.

You can browse legislation by type and year, search by title or keyword, or subscribe to feeds for newly published items. Developers can access legislation data in XML and Atom feed formats through a RESTful API.

All content on legislation.gov.uk is available for reuse under the Open Government Licence v3.0.
