Summary

Sightings made by Tom Kennedy whilst snorkelling in Portland harbour (2 separate occasions).

  1. Snorkel sightings from outfall pipe within 100m of Portland Castle in Portland Harbour. Snorkel done at low tide over mixed rock and muddy sand sea floor, depth 1.5m. 1 Shanny (Lipophrys pholis) and 1 female Black faced blenny (Tripterygion delaisi) seen.
  2. Mixed sand and silt with Portland stone boulders in the harbour, running alongside a storm outfall pipe. Large areas of seaweed seen (mostly Ulva sp.) as well as Fifteen-spine sticklebacks (Spinachia spinachia), Black goby (Gobius niger), Black faced blennies (Tripterygion delaisi) thought to be either all females or non-breeding males, conger eel (Conger conger) and Shannies (Lipophrys pholis). One cushion star seen (Asterina gibbosa), very pale form, almost cream on both sides. Additional comments: 'One Black faced blenny seen defending its territory against another'.
