Salinity is a supporting element and is an ecological factor of considerable importance, influencing the types of organisms that live in a body of water. Salinity also influences the kinds of plants that will grow either in a water body, or on land fed by water.
The tool used to provide Salinity classifications uses electrical conductivity or "reference conductivity", as a proxy for salinity.
The classification method is applied to all lakes with conductivity data within the classification time window and those that are not naturally influenced by saline water ie those not in Brackish type.
