Summary

PLEASE NOTE: This dataset has been retired and superceded by the following record https://environment.data.gov.uk/dataset/d8421893-ff04-492c-8d29-caa89f17397e. This dataset is a subset of "WFD Classification Status Cycle 2" and contains classification data for Salinity in lakes.

Salinity is a supporting element and is an ecological factor of considerable importance, influencing the types of organisms that live in a body of water. Salinity also influences the kinds of plants that will grow either in a water body, or on land fed by water. The tool used to provide Salinity classifications uses electrical conductivity or "reference conductivity", as a proxy for salinity. The classification method is applied to all lakes with conductivity data within the classification time window and those that are not naturally influenced by saline water ie those not in Brackish type. Classification bands are applied as part of classification are Good or Not Good dependent on the average of the reported conductivity within each waterbody.
