The Travel Behaviour Change team provide road safety education, training and publicity to schools, communities, businesses and Leeds residents. We promote active and sustainable travel throughout Leeds along with helping schools and businesses to develop and implement their travel plans (which promote safe and sustainable travel). Each year we request pupil mode of travel data from schools in Leeds. The 10 modes of travel specified in the travel to school survey are: Bus (type not known), Car Share (children travelling together from different households), Car/Van, Cycle, Dedicated School Bus, Other, Public Bus Service, Taxi, Train, Walk (including scooting) This travel survey forms part of the Statutory duty local authorities have to monitor the success of promoting active and sustainable travel, and in some cases is linked to a school’s planning obligated travel plan. In October 2022 Leeds adopted a ‘Vision Zero’ approach to road danger. Leeds is the first authority in West Yorkshire to adopt this, and the Leeds Safe Roads Vision Zero 2040 is our own ambition to eliminate fatal and serious road injuries from our city's roads. Vision Zero will support our Transport Strategy’s aim to be a ‘city where you don’t need a car’ and support our efforts to cut harmful carbon emissions as part of our response to the climate emergency by facilitating a shift towards safe and sustainable modes of travel. The data helps us understand the environmental context in Leeds and work to effectively limit carbon emissions wherever possible. We strongly encourage all schools to provide travel data but not all of them respond to the request and we do not always receive a response for every pupil/student so some school response rates may be low.
