Summary

This British Geological Survey (BGS) marine sampling survey took place in August 2001 in the area of the Hebrides Shelf, Rockall Trough and Rockall Bank on board the RRS James Clark Ross. The aims were: 1) to acquire samples of metamorphic basement in order to identify and characterise the different Pre Cambrian terrains west of Scotland, 2) to acquire samples of igneous rocks for inorganic geochemical and isotopic analysis and age dating in order to elucidate the temporal, spatial and evolutionary development of UK Atlantic volcanic continental margin and 3) to acquire other sedimentary cores, in the vicinity of the Hebrides Terrace Seamount, mainly to study slope processes. The BGS rockdrill was used to collect hard rock cores. The BGS vibrocore and gravity core were used to collect soft sediment cores. Technical details of the survey are contained in BGS reports IR/02/049 and CR/01/230.
