Summary

The adopted Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Minerals and Waste Local Plan (2021) designates Mineral Safeguarding Areas (MSA) for deposits of sand and gravel; brick clay; limestone and chalk. MSA cover resources that are considered to be of current or future economic importance, they seek to prevent this mineral resource being needlessly sterilised by non-mineral development. The designation triggers a requirement for district councils to consult the County Council as the Mineral Planning Authority on planning applications received by them for development in MSA; and policy criteria must be met prior to the development being permitted.
