This is a shapefile of the coastal physiographic feature type 'estuaries'. The polygons in this shapefile represent the estuaries found within the UK. Where, estuary is defined as part of Annex I 1160 -Large Shallow Inlets and Bays: Downstream part of a river where it widens to enter the sea. Often with significant freshwater influence and predominantly comprising sediment habitats. For sub-divisions (coastal plain, bar-built and complex) see Davidson et al (1991).
