Deaths
Two key sources about deaths from Covid-19 at LA level are ONS data and local registrar data. They are derived from the same source (civil registration data). ONS data is more comprehensive as it includes deaths of York residents which have occurred and been registered outside York. Local registrar data provides a breakdown by age and gender. For both data sources a death from Covid-19 is said to have occurred when Covid-19 has been recorded on the death certificate. The most recently available data is summarised below:
• ONS Weekly data: In the most recent period (2023 Week 38: 16.9.23 to 22.9.23) 0 Covid-19 deaths were recorded as having occurred for CYC residents. In weeks 37 and 36 there had been 0 and 0 deaths respectively. Please note that due to lags in death registration, weekly totals are subject to revision.
• ONS Cumulative data: Since the start of the pandemic, for deaths occurring up to 22nd September 2023 and registered up to 30th September 2023, 600 Covid-19 deaths were recorded as having occurred for CYC residents (386 in hospital, 158 in care homes, 46 at home/elsewhere and 10 in a hospice). The cumulative number of deaths per 100,000 of population in York is 284 which is lower than the national average of 345.
