A conservation area is defined as an area of 'special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance'. Conservation areas were introduced through the Civic Amenities Act 1967. They are designated by local authorities under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. Polygon data captured against Ordnance Survey Mastermap from alignments shown on existing paper plans of varying scales created over time since 1974. Attribute fields included:

  1. NAME = Name of conservation area;
  2. STATUS = Status of conservation area;
  3. DESIG = Designation date (dd-mmm-yyyy).
