Summary

The Chester Archaeological Period Characterisations were created as part of the Chester Urban Archaeological Database (UAD) Project and encompass the Chester non parish area and civil parishes of Chester Castle and Great Boughton. The Chester Archaeological Period Characterisations were based primarily on archaeological evidence, rather than on the relatively recent historic urban development and are deliberately a broad brush characterisation for the given period. The modern period from 1800 to the present day, although spanning a relatively short period, records a significant level of change in the urban environment with a significant impact on the archaeological resource.
