Summary

This dataset shows the percentage of each 10x10 km squares in Scotland with mountain hares present during a questionnaire survey of estates, undertaken in 2006 and 2007. Although the data are now quite old (and the survey has since been repeated by GWCT), the map does indicate in general terms those parts of the country with the greatest hare abundance. While some changes are likely since 2007, the overall picture is not considered to have changed much. The map can be used as a starting point for indicating those areas where mountain hares are most likely to be encountered (and vice versa).
