Summary

Composite dataset of the Smoke Contol Areas formally ordered by the 3 boroughs that now form CWAC. Smoke Control Area Orders can be made under varions editions of the Clean Air Acts and may cover existing or proposed areas of development. Some Orders contain exemptions covering a very limited numbers of properties often these preserve features in historic buildings. Where posssible these are excluded from the polygon or may be within the polygon and listed in the data table. Within an area the fuels burnt and appliances used with a domestic chimney are legally required to be smokeless. Authorisation programs exist to test fuels and appliances for compliance. A few exempt appliances are capable of burning non-smokeless fuel such as wood without generating excess smoke, these are subject to approval and must burn the fuel type specfied.
